Just got off the phone with ReplayTV. Two hundred bucks!?

I finally decided that paying the fifty bucks was worth avoiding the
effort of cobbling together a junk peecee to re-image my 4160.

The last time it went tango uniform out of warranty, I just got
an RMA number, they charged me fifty bucks, and I UPSed the unit
to them and got a working refurb in exchange.

Well, I called them up to do that (and the 800 number has been
closed, and the tech support is office hours only), and ended up
talking to a second rate Indian call center.

(If you're going to offshore your phone support to the opposite side
of the world, does it make sense to restrict it to US office hours
only?)

Anyway, the charge is 199.95. And the clerk claimed it's *always*
been that. Yeah, right. You're not even a ReplayTV employee, the
screen in front of you just popped up "ReplayTV" and the appropriate
script based on the called number.

Unclef**krs, the lot of them.


So now I do have to cobble together a junk peecee.

Lovely.

Is there any place that you can send the drives to, to have them
imaged? PTVUpgrade.com has a $75 service for TiVo drives - send them
any drive (existing TiVo drive, or new drive), tell them how you need
it imaged and they do it and return it. Anything like that for RTV?

For that price, go to http://www.replaytv.us/

My drive for a 125 gig was $125. When I got it, I plugged
it in to the Replay unit, fired it up and it was ready to
go. They supply the drives with the correct unit image
ready to go. I have been very happy to have 125 hours on a
3060 unit. :)

95% go the other way.

They are right. After 90 days, but within 1 yr you have a parts warranty
and they charge a flat $50 labor rate.

When the unit is out of warranty, it is a flat rate of $199 to
repair/replace it. And it's always been that way.

$45 to image a drive. Sounds very much like what PTVUpgrade does for
TiVo. You send them a drive, them image it and send it back.

Another idea is to buy the $40 120GB drives Circuit City had a while
ago (there's always a sale going on somewhere...), put the correct
image on it yourself, and put it into the ReplayTV. Total cost, $45
or so plus an hour or so of your time.

Well, Mark's thing was that he doesn't have a PC available to do the
work himself and he'd have to build a PC from parts just to image the
drive - he already has a drive and the images, just not the PC to do
the work.

One good thing about building PCs for a one time mission is you don't have to
get fancy (cases and such). Just cobble the parts together on a non conductive
table top and get on with your mission.

When I am building up a machine from junk parts (where I get virtually all of
my PCs) I always start it up first on the bench to be sure all the parts are
good, before I waste the time of finding or building a case. I usually run a
"burn in" program overnight. If you have some high performance parts that get
hot, just put a desk fan next to it, blowing on the video accellerator or
whatever else you have that runs hot.

I've got a PC like that. It works fine if you don't shake the MB too
much (the LAN adapter, the only PCI card comes loose).

Ah! OK, one choice is the $75 service, or he could buy a $25 USB case
to hold the 3.5" drive, and then format the device and place the
ReplayTV files on it that way - plus he could keep the device for
future use....
