Amazon and Google both make a fortune by giving away Android, and practically giving away the Kindle.

Contrast this with Microsoft's ham-fisted attempts to break into the smartphone/tablet/search markets, and you get a good idea of which tech companies will dominate the next decade, and which ones will go the way of Geocities, MySpace, etc...

Wait, how would ads on the Kindle when it's in sleep mode work? After all, LCDs consume a LOT more power than e-ink screens...

I sure as hell don't want Google to completely own this sector. Two or three more competitors needs to keep Google in check.
