is this mandatory or just a suggestion to get the most out of kinect. The move suggest a distance of 6-8 feet but i doing just fine from 4 feet away. Can the same be done with the kinect or will the kinect just not work if it senses you are closer than 6 feet.

Note: I've spent a fair amount of time with one.

You couldn't do it with 4 feet. It wouldn't have a wide enough angle to see your legs (or your raised arms depending on how you had the sensor positioned). There is also front and back "wall" to the sensor zone. I know it's closer than 6 feet..maybe about 4? but you need to stand at 6 so you'll have room for your arms/legs to extend forward. It would work for basic console and media controls though..you don't pause with your feet :) and there are "sitting" games coming out I've heard.

You need more room for two players for the side to side space. It's viewing you from a camera(ish thing). so the sensor space with a front and back wall resembles a trapezoid rather than a rectangle on the floor. To get the extra width for two people you gotta move back just a bit to have room not to whack each other.
.
Besides even if 6 feet is fine for the sensor it won't be fine for the player. You'll need more room to move around. To give you a rough idea: picture the space needed for a hyperactive wii player. It's about that much.

The short version: You'll find the space requirements very reasonable I doubt there will be any complaints except by those that are just...man what were you thinking with your dinky little closet apartment?

I think people who complain about the space requirements should just play this on their 3rd story balcony or higher,,, come'on,, its just common sense for them to indicate space so you're not smashing into things or your friends and to help prevent some lawsuits like for those reasons,,,, the wii even needs some room and you better be damn sure that so will the move,,, 6 feet is not a lot of room at all, if your room is too small to make room for a single player,, you may be better just putting your money in the bank and saving for a larger apartment or house,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,OR MAYBE MOVE OUT OF YOUR MOMS BASEMENT!!

You can list your system specs. Have a cookie. I'm not sure why you just did that, but here on Tom's it's basically a given that most of the people reading this have systems that can outperform a console... it really isn't that hard...

Your CPU can easily handle 3.8GHz, why not overclock it to that range? If your lucky to get a good batch of cores, you may even be able to hit 3.9-4.1 GHz

I easily have double that amount of space, but I will be screwed if I have to take my playing to another room. My bedroom will be tight, but my office does not have that much room.

I guess I will have to go with the Playstation Move, to make sure that I can play in any room that I have a console in.

Ok, I heard that there were would be a large space requirement.. but this really is unfortunate. I'll have to upgrade my house before I can play Kinect. What a joke.

There's an alternative product under development that doesn't suffer from this problem at all: you can be as close as you like. It also does more than Kinect, and it's cross-platform too. At o3di.com

I've been getting fed up of having to try and stand in the doorway to be at the right distance to play my Kinect - but I found this the other day which looks like it might be good ( http://www.gamingzap.com/xbox-360-accessories/xbox-360-kinect-accessories.html). Anybody have one?
