Laptop dissonance when using external speakers, earbuds

When i plug in earbuds to laptop, sound is garbled, incomplete and/or noisy. The earbuds are fine when plugged into my phone. The laptop speakers are also fine. But when I plug in earbuds or external speakers, the sound is distorted. Any good way to resolve this issue cost-effectively; i.e., free if possible??? Thanks!!!

You could try cleaning the headphone jack on the laptop. Different methods online such as
