hi all,

i have a hp pavillion dv7-3180us entertainment notebook...when i turn it on i get a screen showing system information and at the bottom it says press Esc to continue but when i do, nothing happens.

that notebook is quite old and i just wanted to boot it up and start using. i replaced its 750gb hard drive with a samsung 500gb hard drive without any OS... i was thinking of installing linux in it..

i was thinking of installing linux in an external hard drive and then putting that hard drive in the notebook....

any help will be greatly appreciated..

thanks..

Hi,

If I understand the issue correctly you said you just installed a different HDD and you haven't installed any OS in it right? Yes you can go right ahead and install Linux in it since it's a new HDD and even other Operating System would work. If you're thinking of loading the OS using an external driver you'll need to change the boot priority first making your USB drive as the first boot device instead of your DVD or HDD.

I wish i could do that...but i am also not able to access the bios menu...

when i turn it on...it says press F1 for system information and nothing else..when i press F1 it js takes me to another black screen just showing my laptop details like the processor type and how much ram is installed..and i can not proceed any further..........
