Laptop freezes constantly, replaced HD, same problem

I have a Sony vaio 5 year old laptop that has worked fine. After taking it through airport security, it started hanging, to the point I had to format it. No change. It popped up with a smart HD failure message so I replaced the HD. I installed the OS which took 2 days since it kept hanging and freezing on install. Now it has the same problem again. I've ran memory tests, everything is fine. What could this be?

You did well by replacing the HDD if it had errors, because it could be quite risky to store important data on such a drive. Having in mind it's not the memory and you've reinstalled your Windows from scratch, it sounds like there might be an issue with the SATA port, SATA cable or the motherboard itself. I'd recommend that you take your laptop to a service shop for further testing in order to find out what's the exact problem.
