Laptop Hard Drive Backup

Boy am I in over my head. I want to copy information off of my laptop hard
drive. It is a long story why. I have removed the hard drive and bought a
connector so that I can connect the lap top hard drive to my tower
computer. The connector has taps on one side to supply power to the laptop
drive. The problem is that the connector has all of its pins on the top an
the bottom on both of the male sides and all the holes on the femal side so
I do not know which way to plug it in. The mating female plug (the one on
the wireing harnes of the tower) has a pin hole missing so that I will have
to remove one pin from the connector so that I can plug it in. My question
is which side should the electrical connection be on and which pin should I
remove from the connector? Once I remove a pin the connector is usless if I
do it upside down and even worse if I do it upsidedown I may fry the laptop
drive.

Is there a website taht I can go to?

What you want to do is try to find an indication of "pin 1" on each
side and try to line them up. Sometimes "pin 1" is noted by the
number on the PC board or some other indicator.

Might help if you have a digital camera and could snap a photo or two
of the hardware in question, close-up.

FYI, a USB drive enclosure might have been an easier (though slightly
more expensive way) to do the same thing. You could have just plugged
the enclosure into desktop's USB port (if it has USB 2.0).

Another approach to transferring data might have been to network the
two computers together with a crossover cable to make a simple
Ethernet network.

Let me try to help you out.

Look at the back of the laptop drive, e.g. look at the connector.

There are 44 pins together, and then a gap and then 4 more pins kind of
separate from the other 44 pins.

Looking at the drive, flip it so that the 4 pins by themselves are on
the right.

Now, ignoring those 4 pins and concentrating on the group of 44 pins (2
rows of 22 pins each), pins 1 & 2 are on the right side of the drive,
pins 43 and 44 are on the left. The odd pins are on the top row, the
even pins are on the bottom row. The pin used as a "key" that is
sometimes missing, is pin 20 on the 2.5" drive, it's therefore very
slightly to the right of center in the bottom row. [As for the 3.5" IDE
cable, I'd suggest that you just get another cable; on any cable, the
edge with the stripe is supposed to be the pin 1 edge).

Power on the 2.5" drive goes to pin 41 and 42, the next to the last
column on the left. Trace out the path on the circuit board so that you
know which side of the circuit board goes to pin 1/2 and which side to
43/44 (the circuit board may also have be explcitly numbered).
