laptop keyboard typing wrong charachter

i just installed ubuntu 14.04 and when i type # then it will give £ also when i type @ then it will give " any many more in case of other symbols so plz give me solution ! i also see numlock is off or not but still its not working

you have setup the keyboard layout as a US version.
go to settings and find the keyboard icon, open it and look for the layout tab, there you can change to a UK layout.

I'm using mint linux the instructions may not be perfect but should at least help
