My Toshiba laptop isn’t connecting to internet. We have tried to use an Ethernet cable and tried a wireless adopter. It will connect, but says there’s an IP problem. How do I fix it?

Solution
You need to go to your router, check it has electric power to it and press the Reset button. After a few minutes and see if that wireless device can "see" it.

If it can, input the wireless security key and you should be able to connect to the Net.
You have two IP addresses, an external one that gives you a unique address in the world and an internal that denotes which device you're using on your network. You need to fix an internal address because it's the one that's been determined is failing.

Here's the long boring bit. Go from the Start button into Control Panel then to Network and Sharing Centre. Click on Change adapter settings then double click on Wi-fi which shows up Properties. Click on that then on Internet Protocol Version 4 - IP - geddit?.

Nearly there. Click on Properties and you see a for which invites you to allocate an address instead of using the automatic one that isn't working. So click on both buttons to "Use the following addres and the DNS server address.

Keep those windows open and press your Windows key and R together then when teh Run box shows up, type
cmd /k ipconfig /all
and hit Enter. In the black form that shows up will be an entry named Default Gateway. Your current internal IP is that 192.168.0.144 (example only) is what you're looking for. Jot it down and close that form.

Back in the settings windows, take the gateway address and input it to the DNS server boxes. Above that, put the first three entries and for the fourth, instead of zero or one, input any even number up to 254. Your defult gateway goes in the box marked that and for the subnet will have filled itself in.

Click OK to find your way out. Hopefully that cures it.
