Laptop slower after factory reset

Last month I factory reset my laptop because windows 10 would not function properly and froze up every couple of seconds. After the reset I'm now running windows 8 and not having any windows related problems. My problem is my laptop now runs slower in games than it used to before the reset, which makes no sense. It seems to be overheating faster and more frequent. Is there a performance difference between windows and and windows 10? I'm hesitant to return to windows 10 because of how badly it was running before.

When you did the reset, did you make sure to check for updates for all your drivers? Also, did you just use the reset that came on the computer? Or did you have a CD/DVD/USB that you did the reinstall from?
