I have a new $1000 gaming laptop, but the battery lasts 1-2 hours on high performance mode, and 4-5 on power saving mode. I charge the laptop multiple times a day, but I'm scared for the battery's lifespan. I want to turn the laptop into a desktop. I might take the battery out, then plug in the laptop and keep it plugged forever. Is it a good idea?

yes & somewhat no. the reason I'm saying that if your are on the laptop & there is a power failure, you'll loose all the stuff on the screen you are working on wereas with battery still in but on external power then you won't loose that stuff. can get a ups so don't need to worry about that.

My own laptop sits plugged into the wall 24/7 with the battery in. The laptop is around 5yrs old and the original battery still works fine whenever I travel -- 2hrs in gaming mode, 5+ hrs with wifi off.

So you should be fine to leave the battery in while the laptop is plugged into the wall.

Most laptops will not continue to charge the battery unless it needs it. Some laptops also won't even work unless the battery is installed, due to the system being designed like a mini-UPS, with the battery constantly supplying power as the charging circuit keeps it topped up.

So to solve the battery life you are turning it into a desktop? that makes no sense. If the battery dies the pc will still wrok fin plugged in. The battery should be good with that kind of use for at least 2 years and after that just buy a new one for $40.

I have not seen a laptop that fails to work without a battery in.

What model do you have exactly and what games do you run? If it is 5 years old I can't imagine it will compare to his new $1k laptop unless you got a super expensive laptop at the time (Several $k). Something like this was high end in 2010 http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=productdetail&model=P170HM&subpage=spec#gotop A gtx 560m? His new laptop will most certainly be harder on the battery, because now days gaming laptops are more supposed to be portable desktops and not run off the battery.

I have an old Thinkpad T500, cost $2k brand new. Obviously this will not play current games, but it will play modded minecraft with my brothers, and It kinda runs (more like walks) some older games Defiance and such. mostly it sits on my desk and runs TS3 and skype.

But that wasnt the point of my post -- The point was you can leave the laptop plugged in 24/7 with the battery and it will not hurt the battery life.

It will over time, but he should be able to get at least 3 years before replacing a battery. Plus a battery shouldn't cost more then $40. The laptop you have is running a 5400rpm hdd, nice lower power using core 2 dou t9400, plus integrated graphics. It also comes with a pretty good sized 6 cell battery rated for a very effective 6 hours. I am pretty sure his laptop won't last nearly that long of the start.

OP, I will mention this one last time, the battery should last you a couple years and the replacement price really won't be that scary that you should sweat about it. Just use it how you want and have fun with it!
