Laptop to TV problem

I am trying to get my laptop, a 5-yr-old Dell E6400 hooked up to my tv, a 2-yr-old Sony KDL 32BX300. So far, I am able to get sound and the desktop background (no icons) through a recommended DVI connection. The resolution is correct; how can I get it so that everything will transfer from the laltop?

Right click on your desktop, goto resolution. In he last box on this page you can choose to extent or duplicate the desktop to the second screen.
