Laptop to tv

I am trying to connect my laptop to my tv so that I can watch netflix on my television I have connected the hdmi lead and added display my desktop background appears on the tv but that isall what do I need to do now

You probably have the display properties set to 'Extend'. Meaning the laptop sees it as one big screen.

If you slide the mouse off the laptop screen, can you see it on the TV?

You shouldn't have to make any setting changes on your laptop. The HDMI jack is already configured to send whatever's on the laptop's screen as an output signal. So the only thing you should need to do is make sure the TV detects the laptop's signal... and even that should be automatic (whenever I plug the HDMI cable into the laptop, our LG TV asks if we want to use the new input signal it's detected).

Yes I am able to get netflix to appear on screen if I sllide mouse of to the right, Only problem is now the laptop goes to screensaver and interupts film. I can change the screen saver setting, but will this cause problems with my screen if I watch films on tv regularly.

That will not cause any problems.
