Laptop wont pickup wireless networks

i borrowed my bfs laptop. and i broke it!.. it wont pick up any wireless networks.. but i know theyre there because it shows but when i try connecting it says it couldnt connect ..sooo lame!..and if he finds out hes gonna get mad haha.. help please?

What exactly appears when your laptop doesn't want to connect? What's your boyfriend laptop? And does it run Windows, Mac OS X, or something else?

Also, does the laptop fail to connect in different areas?
