If I purchase a laptop without an optical drive and does not come with an OS recovery disc what will I need to do if at some point in the future I need to reformat the computer or such? I've had to do so with my current computer before and wonder what will happen if that needs to be done on a laptop without those things. I don't know too much about computers but trying to learn more before I buy anything.

buy an external dvd drive either for laptops or desktops. most if not all preloaded windows computers have a recovery partition in which to re-install windows which means no recovery disk that comes with the computer. most of those computers come with software to make a recovery disk for just in case the hard drive has to be replaced.

If the laptop does not have a physical DVD drive, it will allow you to create that Recovery thing on a USB.
Make 2 of those, and store them away, labeled with DO NOT TOUCH
