[citation][nom]SneakySnake[/nom] a PS3 owner I can say that neither me or any of my friends give a rip about backwards compatibility. Eveyone says that they are gonna play all of their old games but they never do. Why play Socom or Killzone, when the new PS3 versions play the same or better and make the old ones look like poo
They also potentially WON'T be CHARGING, so I don't see what your all worked up about[/citation]
Point 1 - If you or your friends don't care, then I'm not addressing you or any of your friends, am I? I'm clearly seeking an amen from people who think offering back-compatibility as a value feature, then cheating consumers out of it, then putting it back in for an additional cost is more than a bit sleazy. Further, I opened the post as a question... if they're not charging for the compatibility download, that's cool... but if they are, it's a bloody rip-off, ESPECIALLY given all the early marketing hype...
Point 2 - You don't speak for everyone, so don't pretend you do: You want to talk about you and your friends? Well, I happen to know PLENTY of gamers--including myself--who love to dust off the old games for a brief go-round from time to time. If people weren't interested in playing old games, why're X-com, Half-Life and Marvel vs Capcom 2, selling like hotcakes? If people, in general, didn't care about old games why would SONY even be making these legacy titles available now?? And, since you bring it up, my buddy brought a PS3 SPECIFICALLY for the backwards compatibility: since he had a massive library of PS2 titles, many of which he was actively playing. He sold his PS2 because his PS3 was one of the early models with built-in hardware BC. When his first PS3 broke down (red laser died), they sent him a new one (under warranty) but, guess what? The newer models don't have PS2 BC. So, now everyone's tossin', "Oh, well just get a new PS2, they're cheap" Eff all that...He purchased a PS3 that initially included that feature...
Point 3 - "you're" not "your"... and, I'm not worked up that they're offering old games for purchase to people who haven't played them yet, or who've sold/lost/destroyed their old game discs, I'm irritated about SONY potentially limiting the backward compatibility to the versions of titles currently proposed for the PSN and charging a consumer for them, even if said customer already has a working copy of the games--which is a legitimate possibility; or PSN charging PS3 owners for the ability to play any PS2 game with a for-pay emulation scheme, that should already be included with the box...
