Hello,

I just got the y510p and for some reason I only have 2.18gb of RAM usable. What might be the reason, and the solution to this?

Thanks in advance.

Solution
Comparing to my Task Manager screen, if I'm translating this right:

8GB DDR3 installed
In use - 1.2GB
Available - 972MB
Committed - 2.1GB/3.9GB (that would be right for a 32b system)
Hardware Reserved - 5.8GB (the rest of it)

Install a 64bit OS is really your only option.

Yes, I had to open my Properties window to check, and the 3rd line down in System is indeed System type: ....your OS.
In this case, it says "32-...."

The system is indeed 32-bit. So the max for 32-bit windows is 4GB, while I have 8. Still, out of 4 only 2.18 are available and I don't know what's using the other too since I have a discrete GPU (GT 755M) and barely any programs running.

As I understand the only solution is to get 64-bit Windows? Is there a way I can change it expect reinstalling windows?

Thanks again.

A pic of your Task Manager - Performance window would help.
But no....only a resintall with 64bit. There is no 'upgrade'.

I could be mistaken, but I think the Y510p uses Optimus, so when your 755M is not in use, the system is employing the Intel graphics. That should be where you're seeing some of the loss. Windows 8 uses up a bit of RAM as well.

To have a 64 bit version of Windows, you'll need to perform a clean installation. You cannot upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without a reinstall, unfortunately. :(

Better quality now. I tried finding the problem there as well, but nothing seems to be taking up a lot of memory. Even when I was running Call of Duty: MW2 it only used ~650MBs of RAM.
Edit: Inserted right picture.

I figured that, but I also checked it while running COD and anyway only 2.18gb usable.

Since you are using 32 bit OS , you are limited to 3.3GB ram.

Since Y510P uses NVidia optimus technology, which allows you uses Intel Graphics and Discrete graphics together to save energy , intel graphics consumes 1GB ram.

That is why it is showing only 2.2Gb ram.

If you want to get 3.3Gb ram, then look for the option to disable Intel Graphics in BIOS (if it is available).
