Light OS for IBM Thinkpad

I wish to do cross compiling of AVR Microcontroller C Programs and burn it to the chips using ISP protocol (avrdude)

What's the best OS for me, as I've a Pentium IV, 128 MB ram based IBM Thinkpad.

Which Linux distros have you tried?

Maybe puppylinux.

Thanks for the response. I forgot to mention, I required a persistent file system and don't want to run the OS from a usb drive. Also, any lightweight C code editor with color coding, auto indent, etc would be a great addition.

I've tried Ubuntu but the system was too unresponsive and laggy.

Just like any other distro, you can install it to the hard drive
