Question Linux Phone OS? Pure OS?

How difficult would it be to change the O.S. on an android phone? And would said phone need to be unlocked?

You'll find someone you'll like in BusyBox. Download that from the Dev folks at https://developer.android.com and get a Terminal Emuator.

That gives you access to the black and white screen and a Command Line.
