I read that a lid switch might be magnetic so I took a magnet and ran it along the edge of the lid and found that a section of the top left was particularly strongly magnetic. Then I ran the magnet along the edge of the base and found that when the magnet was over the area corresponding to the magnetic area of the lid edge, the screens (I have an external monitor connected) flickered on and off: so, I've located the switch. In this case under the case cover at the front left edge of the laptop base. I'm sure that the way I found it is applicable to other laptops. Thank you.
Now I have to see if I can do something to make sure the LCD screen backlight stays on or if there is something wrong with a component. Switch? Inverter? I don't see what the inverter has to do with it but it's mentioned in various fixit blurbs re this kind of problem.
