Lately, I have been seeing non-tech articles that are locked from comments from the get go. IMO, If they have nothing to do with tech, they either need to be open for comments or not posted at all. After all, this is a tech forum and a forum is a place for discussion.

Except when these comments devolve into arguments of Economics or Politics. Tom's Guide has a strict No G.R.A.P.E.S. policy:
G. uns
• R. eligion
• A. bortion
• P. olitics
• E. conomics
• S. exuality

Locking of these articles is a pre-emptive move to stop these types of discussions. I would note that this is the policy of the FORUMS; enforced by the Volunteer Moderation Staff. The Editorial Staff is not restricted by this and can publish such articles as they deem fit.

if there is a rule against politics then posting it would be a violation no matter who does it. It should never be do as I say and not as it do.
