my goal was under $1000 Touch screen is a must, I prefer backlit keys.

Light gaming - this is not it's main priority just a major perk. I'm not a graphics snob by any means, I will happily play on low settings as long as games perform well. (fallout 3, new vegas, minecraft, skyrim) are the only things I currently play (I have a 360 and xbone) I'll probably pick up gtav and fallout 4 for modding.

I'm going back to school for computer networking and will be using it quite a bit (not necessarily IN class)

I'll travel with it when I'm out of town (I often go out of town on weekends)

Tons of video streaming will be done..

A lot of web browsing and research.

I'm down to these 3 lap tops. I like the perks of the asus having a free 1 year accidental damage plan.

n550jk and n550jx

both with the 1tb 5400 hdd (I can always upgrade later) and both with the 8gb ram the differences are down to the GTX 850m vs GTX 950m and the i7 4700 and the i7 4720

I'm not too sure if the differences in the cpu and gpu make it worth the extra $175ish over the other one

then the third choice is this specific y50 touch.. Like I said gaming isn't the top priority just a perk.. I'm not sure if it's worth it vs the awesome ASUS build quality.

any other suggestions for 1000 or less?

Since you can't upgrade laptops easily if at all, you want to get the fastest system you can afford. If you can spend the extra for a newer and faster video card, then do it. For a $1,000 budget that laptop is as good as anything else in the price range unless you can find a system with a 960m video card and maybe an i5 CPU instead of the i7.

Ok scratch the y50 I missed tax free so now it's way over budget. Can anone name anything competitive with the asus n550jx or n550jx or answer if the slight upgrades make it worth 175 more ?

I ended up going all in and ordered the y50 directly from lenovo. I got the newer touch model with the gtx 960m (4gb) gpu and the i7-4720hq cpu

I did end up getting the lower one with the 8gb or ram (which has always been plenty for anything I've ever used my desktop for)

and the "SS HD" 1tb 5400rpm I figure it'll be fast enough for me if not they are more lax on their warranty. Asus will void it just by opening the laptop and lenovo is perfectly fine with me adding an ssd at a later date without effecting the warranty..

I also went with 2 year damage protection.. said and done it was under 1200.
