Looking for a $1000 or less laptop

Jul 1, 2014
1. What is your budget?
$1000 or less. I can go slightly over budget if it means buying a better product.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
17", I can settle for 15".

3. What screen resolution do you want?
1920x1080 if possible.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Desktop replacement.

5. How much battery life do you need?
Not sure. Being able to watch a few hours of HD video would be nice.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Light gaming only. Minecraft on High settings with 60+ FPS would be ideal, but I can settle for lower FPS.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Basic photo editing with Photoshop.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
I would really prefer an SSD alongside a high capacity hard drive.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
I have always bought my desktop components from http://www.ncix.com/, so if I could order my laptop from them that'd be great. Not necessary, though.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
1-2 years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Doesn't really matter.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I've never bought a laptop for myself before, so no preference here.

13. What country do you live in?
I live in Canada.

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
As mentioned above, I'll be using this laptop primarily for light gaming (Minecraft mostly) and watching videos (movies, TV shows, etc preferably in HD). Most of the time, I will have access to a power outlet so the battery life doesn't have to be extremely good, but being able to watch a few hours of HD video while using the battery is definitely a plus.

Wow, looking for all of those in a laptop under $1,000 was hard, but I managed to find something a little more expensive that should cater to ALL your needs (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314160)

This listing contains a GTX760M, which should play minecraft on high settings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i3WY0evjLE). It also includes a 120GB SSD and a 1920x1080 screen.

Additionally, iBUYPOWER has some great laptops in your price range (Battalion line) that you can consider (http://www.ibuypower.com/Site/17-Inch-Gaming-Laptop). Hopefully, this helps and widens your selection.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact me at jason.maryne@ibuypower.com. :)

Since you are in Canada here are two laptops from Newegg.ca that will meet your requirements.

17" Lenovo IdeaPad Z710 = $980 CAD + $15 CAD Shipping
- Intel Core i7 4700MQ (Quad Core)
- 8GB Memory
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 745M

17" MSI GP70 Leopard-010 Gaming Notebook = $1,000 CAD + 18 CAD Shipping
- Intel Core i5 4200M (dual core)
- 8GB Memory
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 840M

Neither has laptop has a SSD. They are relatively expensive and would increase the price. However. The MSI laptop should have two mSATA slots available to you so that you can install your own mSATA format SSD drives. The Lenovo only has one drive bay and no mSATA or M.2 expansion ports for you to install a SSD drive. If you want a SSD drive then you need to install a 2.5" SSD in place of the HDD.

The Lenovo has a more powerful CPU (it's a quad core). Both the nVidia GT 745m and GT 840m should be fairly equal to each other. I have not really seen any reviews of the new GT 800m series. While the MSI only has a dual core CPU, it has 2 mSATA port for you to install two mSATA format SSD drives if you wish to.

Sorry, I didn't realize that they didn't sell it on Newegg.ca :(

Regarding your question, yes, it can. (http://www.ncix.com/detail/acer-v3-772g-9643-intel-i7-4702qm-8gb-6c-83177-1264.htm)

The reviewers for this laptop have been able to install a secondary drive (mSATA SSD). Hope this helps!
