The most I'm willing to spend is about $900. I'm looking for a laptop that i'll basically take to class with me so I can stay awake. I want the screen size to be either 14.1 or 15.4 inches. I'm gonna use it to surf the web, watch some multimedia stuff and maybe even a little bit of gaming. What should I look for in a laptop? What should I avoid? What brands are good? Where should I look to buy? Basically, what's the best laptop i can get for not more than $900. Thanks.

Have a look at the Dell Inspiron 1420 (14.1") or 1520 (15.4"). Make sure you also have a look for any coupons or discounts you got. I got 5% off ($130) by simply asking if there was any discounts for Uni students such as myself.

I just bought a 1420 recently, just got a call from the Depot so I'll be picking it up today :D .

You could configure this Dell Insirion that comes with 2GB of RAM and 160GB hdd. I'd move the CPU up at least one level and get Vista Home Premium.

The cost right now is $886.05. Is there anything i should upgrade? The other Core Duo processor i can select is Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2450 (2.0 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB). Is that better?

no that is the older version of the intels dual core technology. the core 2 duo is the lastest and greatest right now. Also, i have the hp DV6358 special edition. its white and silver with the same processor, memory, display, wireless card, hard drive, and microphone and webcam. It has the 12 cell battery (great upgrade) also. its a 1300 dollar pc that i got for 999.99 just a month ago.

Be careful about buying laptops for school. Sometimes you have to have the business version of the MS Oper System to get online at school.
