In this case, I would highly recommend anything from the Toshiba Satellite line. Their laptops are solid, they last, and they're easy to work on. I have a Toshiba Satellite that's six years old and it will still outbeat all the new stuff out there because I've taken care of it.

Everyone will give you a different answer here, but this is just my suggestion.

If you want to do productivity work (and not gaming), consider a business laptop. You can get really good performance and fantastic battery life out of those. Amongst , all business laptops, we love the ThinkPad T460 most, because of its 13+ hours of battery life and fantastic keyboard. However, it is dual-core. There's a quad-core version called the T460p which we haven't tested.

We also really like the Dell Latitude E5570, which is available with quad core processors.
