1. My budget is $500 minimum and about $1000 max.

2. I think 15" is about right for screen size.

3. 1366 x 768 would be a minimum resolution.

4. My laptop is just for basic needs, websurfing, taking notes, and light gaming.

5. About 5 hours on a charge would be ideal, maybe 2-3 hours on gaming. Honestly I don't care because if I'm using it for gaming it will always be plugged in.

6. I would like to play old games like far cry, doom 3, or half life 2 maxed out. Maybe some newer games but not many. I have a desktop for the newer games.

7. Watching HD movies and music would be it.

8. I don't need a ton opf storage I don't really care about it at all.

9. I'll buy the laptop from any reputable retailer or supplier.

10. I'd like to have the laptop last for around 3-4 years.

11. I just need a basic optical drive.

12. I'm pretty open to any brand.

13. I live in the USA

14. I'm ok with refurb but I want really scrutinize it if I can.

Thanks Guys.

Just so you know Maz, Doom 3 and HL2 don't require a whole lot of power. A GT 240M can play HL2 on high settings with over 100 FPS. Far Cry 2 will be a little tougher, but it's still doable (definitely on Medium). 5 hours is still going to be a stretch with a Mid-level card, but we can at least get closer.

Lenovo with 3.5 hours: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146719
