My son wants to play hardcore games like Battlefield 4 and others. My price limit is $1,199.99 and under. I did some research and here's what I found, if it's true - the M290X performs a bit below the GeForce GTX 780M and slightly above the Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M. Therefore, almost all demanding games of 2013 will run fluently on very high details and 1080p resolution.

However, I want to make sure he can play 2014 and 2013 games.....

Option 1 -
MSI GT Series GT60 2OC-022US Notebook 15.6"
Intel Core i7-4700MQ 2.4GH
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 770M 3GB GDDR5
8GB Memory
1 TB Hard Drive
1920 x 1080
DVD Super Multi

Option 2 -
MSI GX Series GX60 Destroyer-280 Gaming Notebook 15.6"
AMD A-Series A10-5750M (2.50GHz)
8GB Memory
1TB HDD Not Included SSD
AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2GB
1920 x 1080
DVD Super Multi

What option is good?

if it were me, I would be far more inclined to go with option 1, whilst the M290X is a few % better than the 770M, there's a lot of difference between the two processors and that I think tips the balance for me, otherwise they're the same, the same chassis, size, brand and quality.

I found this laptop with a i5 processor. Would this laptop be better b/c of the newer video card? He won't be doing any editing or using multiply screens. Just hard core gaming!

• Intel® Core™ i5-4200H Processor
• 17.3" Full HD Anti-Reflective Display (1920x1080; 16:9)
• NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 860M 2G GDDR5

I found this video card ranking from a web site and I'm not sure if I'm reading this correctly? A AMD Radeon R9 M290x is rated better than GTX 870M and GTX 770M. Why would I not get the AMD Radeon R9 going with option 2 instead of 1?

1. High-End Graphics Cards
These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled Anti-Aliasing.
13 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M
16 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M
20 AMD Radeon R9 M290X
22* NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M
31 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
35 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M

As I said in previous post, the processor on option 2 is terrible, yes they're both quad core, but the AMD A5750M absolutely sucks compared to the I7 4700MQ, the difference in the processor more than makes up for the difference in graphics. Furthermore, AMD's new mantle was a bit of a flop apparently, it was supposed to improve performance but a lot of people say otherwise about it. I would still go for option 1.
and as to your other option, no again, yes the 860M is minimally better than the 770M - and I mean like 2-3% overall, the I5 4200H doesn't function nearly as well as the I7 4700, the I5 is only dual core and with the current games all rolling out support for quad core processors, the dual core is going to function less well in the future.
Hope this helps.
