I installed a new ss hard drive to my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop and lost the ability to turn off the touchpad when using a mouse. Tried downloading some Synaptics drivers but they didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?

Try the following and see if it fixes it...

1. Go into "Control Panel".
2. Click "Hardware and Sound".
3. Now click "Mouse and Touchpad".
4. Now go to "Additional mouse options".
5. The Mouse Properties window will open. In here click on your device.
6. Make sure the "Mouse" is set as the default device (it must be connected to do this). It should then not show as default when not connected.

It should work now.

No good. No option to set as default. With the original harddrive (with Vista operating system) the mouse properties window had a check box for disabling the touchpad when mouse is plugged in. That disappeared when I installed the new harddrive and upgraded to windows 7. Also, device manager does not have a disable choice, only an uninstall choice which I would rather no do.
