I'm looking to buy my son a laptop so he can do his homework and play minecraft. I'm looking at a MacBook Air. It has: 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; "Fast" SSD(according to listing); NVidia GeForce graphics; M.S. office suite 2011

Would this work or should I consider a base model MacBook Pro?

Solution
Yes you will be able to play minecraft using it as Minecraft uses hardly any system power and can run on most laptops/computers. the MacBook can easily run it.
Hope I have helped :)

You could always build a Hackintosh

hackintosh is a bit too complicated so yeah i think the air is ok, what about an iMac they re more powerful and around the price of the air

In less your son is working with garageband, or any other mac specific programs, using a windows laptop will be no different than using an overpriced mac. There are typically no compatibility issues with the two types of laptops. You get a mac, for either jumping on the bandwagon or video/picture editing.

It all comes down to this, the Mac book air is okay but WAY over priced. If you just want a Mac and dont want to get something else get the macbook pro. if you are willing to spend that much money on a mac, what I would do is get a gaming laptop like the razer blade. So what all of this comes to is that Macs kinda are overpriced over rated computers. I have a mac and it runs minecraft just fine(with optifine, (a free mod that boots performance) But if you are willing to spend that much money on a computer for your son JUST GET THE RAZER BLADE! It will run minecraft VERY well and will be great for anything else. So it just depends on what OS you want. Its really easy to go to windows, I am on a mac right now and I like it, but EVERY pc laptop I have EVER used WAY out-performs the Mac(Even the $400 cheap PC laptops). If it were me I would get used to the windows 8, and get a WAY better computer for a similar price. So just get the razer blade and be happy you got your son a REALLY nice PC and tell him he can get used to the OS. Macs are WAY over priced and are not worth spending the money on. I know you may be thinking that the razer blade is the same price for same thing? Its not, its alot better than any Mac for that price.

If I satisfied you pick me as solution.

if you REALLY need a mac fine choose the air but you can save $500 and buy a more powerful laptop with the extra money you can buy a bunch of programs to convert mac applications to windows

Solution

we know that, we are just saying she can also get programs that can convert mac files to windows like MS office mac edition while using a 500$ cheaper laptop

Yeah! Macs are just not worth it! Get a MSI G60 OR G70!

I'm looking at a macbook air with the same specs. $400.00 is pretty cheap in my opinion. Cant find a windows machine that will touch its capability for the price. Not to mention once you download all the virus stuff on the pc you'll be lucky if it runs at all. I just sent a windows 8 machine back to dell because it was constantly locking up right out of the box. (Junk) I think what your looking at will do the job and fit his school work too. Pull the trigger and get it. If your like me building a machine is for people who have nothing better in their lives to do. I'm sure keeping up with your kids activities is way more important. Just my 2 cents.
