Making it fit

I recorded a three hour television movie in high quality the other day.

I decided later to put it on a DVD to take it to a friend.

Even after removing the commercials it was around 5.5GB and would not fit on
a standard DVD.

There has to be some freeware/shareware program out there that will allow me
to change the size of an MPEG that I created in DVArchive so that it would
fit on a single disc

Anyone? TIA!

Not sure about shrinking the actual MPG, but check out DVD Shrink. It
may be able to shrink an ISO file (write the DVD to an ISO image file,
not a blank disc) or a folder of VOBs and IFOs.

I would use DVD shrink. I would like to know that program did you use
to edit out the commercials?

High quality is a big waste. Medium (or even Standard) would work. The
actual difference in quality is mostly related to the amount of
compression. Differences (if any) will show up in fast action scenes
(trhose with a lot of change).

With Medium, I gound get over 2 hours on a DVD, or over 5 with
Standard.

Note that those times are the actual time on the DVD. If the source is
regular TV and commercials are removed, that's 3 hours for Medium and
6-7 for Standard.

TMPGEnc probably will. If that movie is on again, you may find it
easier to record it again using less than High. Medium should fit.

I use DVD2One. It's simpler to use and the last time I looked, it did a bit
more than DVD Shrink. Though DVD Shrink has a nicer-looking GUI and is
free. To edit out commercials, I use Womble's MPEG Video Wizard. It is
definitely *not* free, but it's a true frame editor and works great.

yeah, with a horrendous interface.

VideoReDo is much better.

If you use High, your DVD player may not play the file. Replay allows
for a higher peak bitrate in High than the DVD standard allows for. A
picky player may balk. You should always use Medium.

Hmm, it's also half the price. Where were you when everyone was
recommending Womble??????????? ;-) BTW Womble's MVW may be a bit daunting
at first look, but it's not difficult to use at all.

Margaret

Well, I started with VideoReDo a week or so ago, and got some edits done
VERY quickly.

Then I hit Womble to give it a try, and that interface is an utter mess.
I just want to cut commercials out and save an mpeg without them.
Womble made no sense to me, having come from VideoReDo.

Looks like I'm ponying up for VideoReDo.

I can take Standard mpegs right out of Replay and use Toast (Macintosh)
to burn video DVDs. They look superb.

Or Standard, which looks fine and lets you put over 5 hours on one DVD
(Medium is limited to about 2.5). Depending on the player (VLC works
OK), you may get the wrong aspect ratio on your computer, but DVDs
will play correctly.

I would too, but I already own Womble's MVW. I got it a about a year ago.
Maybe VideoReDo is relatively new?

I have no idea. I heard about it just last week, went and got it, and
found it very easy to do just what I wanted.

$50, though...I'm still on trial period.

Are you talking about Womble or Media Wizard?
Media wizard allows you to import the Replay's CA marker file as a
bookmark file. You add the bookmark file, it marks the commercials, hit
go and you're done. Nothing simpler than that.

Mpeg-VCR.
Thanks for the DVD Shrink suggestions. I'll give it a try.

Thanks Margaret. I have that program somewhere, just haven't used it. Like I
said earlier, I remove the commercials with MPEG Video Wizard's little
sibling, MPEG-VCR and then put on DVD with ULEAD's DVD Movie Factory 2.0. I
might try out DVD2One if I can find it.

Hi George,

Here's the link to DVD2One. I bought it a long time ago, so it may predate
DVD Shrink. http://www.dvd2one.com/index.php Whereas DVD2One is a snap to
use, DVD Shrink's UI has confounded me on more than one occasion. But it's
free, and seems to work. :) BTW, DVD2One has a version for MacOS-X.

Margaret

Thanks, Mark. I really don't know how it recorded in High. Maybe I set it up
from the Powermid RF interface in the kitchen while the Replay unit is in
the Living room. The RF interface is nothing to be desired and sometimes
behaves erratically, if at all. I never go more than medium because I can't
see the difference.

Thanks to all.

Those (Powermids and compatibles) are very susceptible to
interferance, a problem which gets worse as you add to your A/V
system. I guit using then when I got tired of "reorient the antennas
to reduce interferance" several times a day.

I have used the Xantech system (sends control signals on the coax) and
RF controls.
