Hey guys,

My wife needs a laptop for med school and I'm not sure what to look for.

1. What is your budget?
No budget if you think it will last and be reliable for 4+ years. She can't have her hard drive breaking during a massive project.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
Not positive I was thinking around 13-15 for portability and battery life.

3. What screen resolution do you want?
The prettier the better 😀

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Both.

5. How much battery life do you need?
She should have access to plugs in the rooms, but that is no guarantee.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Not really for games but some of the programs may require good graphics.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, Etc.)
Probably lots of research on the web.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
figured around 500 to be safe so a SSD seems out plus I don't know the reliability of them. I've been seeing 7200 RPM, that wont kill battery life will it? I saw a 500gb 7200 with 4gb ssd for os maybe is that any good?

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
http://www.xoticpc.com/ - just saw this link on the forums and the ability to customize looks great, but I don't care really.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
4+ years

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
I figured having a bluray reader would be important just in case.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
NO IDEA here. I saw a list someone put out there but no research to back it up saying that ASUS was high quality then toshiba, sony and dell. No macs though.

13. What country do you live in?
USA

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Reliability is key. I really don't want her computer to break and have her lose days of work. I also want it to be fast, the quicker she is done the more I get to see her 😀.

I know the new processors are out there, but I don't know if they are any good for laptops. Also I'm not sure how much RAM is necessary before overkill or what speed.

Last thing, battery life is important, but speed, power and reliability are more important.

Thanks for all of the help.

Forgot to ask if there was a difference between the wireless cards that you can put in the laptops. I don't want that to be the reason her comp is going slow in class.

@ UNC Med school:
"Laptop Requirement
The School of Medicine requires that all first year medical students purchase a specific specially configured PC laptop computer from UNC Student Stores upon entering medical school. This laptop will be ordered for you and will be delivered during orientation.
"

@ UT Med school the requirement is more generic:
http://www.uth.tmc.edu/med/msit/policy/students.html

@ UM Med school they feature a video on the trend toward tablet/convertible tablet laptops:

The requirements here are more like the UT requirements.

We were really interested in the tablet style, but they all seem so outdated. If anyone has any information on the tablet convertible ones I would love that too.
