Another useless invention.
The reason we're still using keyboards is because so many different accents and voices.. And a computer still makes too many mistakes into translating the voice accurately.

I hate those automated phones where you need to say a series of numbers (like when licensing your Windows product over the phone) within a certain amount of minutes, try it 3 times before some operator gets on the line that does the job simply because a computer can not do something as simple as that!

Let alone communicate or understand a human speaking more than just numbers.
Even the dragon software (speech recognition software) still makes too many mistakes, and uses hordes of system resources!

Simple to you, maybe, but to do the same thing for a computer is monumentally difficult, because of exactly what you said: different accents and voices.

Equating what we can do to what a computer can do isn't always the best comparison.

The problem with speaking is that a human can barely understand what some people are saying half the time, how do you expecta computer to. And it can be soooo frustrating when it keys in the wrong word or executes the wrong command, or fails to capitalize the wrong part of the word, and fixing the error with voice commands takes like another 10 commands, which if you get wrong might end up deleting your file. Nope very soon you are going to find out that the keyboard and mouse is your best friend, and the only things you will be shouting to your computer are expletives.

for voice compatibility , humans should not adapt their natural accents to computer , that would be sad . the computers should come up to the mark where they can listen cleanly by themselves .

How about better voice recognition technology (a hit and miss for some, works well with some, horribly with others) along with a secong gen OCZ NIA (neural impulse actuator, which is also a hit and miss, and requires a lot of patience).
The NIA would control all mouse movement and clicking, voice for your basic commands, and the keyboard for your typing for the odd occasion when you would need to.

For basic browsing, a NIA headset with a mic could completely satisfy your needs.

Speaking about mind control, I'd like to see what could be done with an emotiv epoc(http://emotiv.com/). If it works well, it could be way faster than any voice recognition based control.
Just think about a web page you remember (may be one you visit regularly) and voilà.
But I think this will be the next next next gen control for OS after touch, gesture, voice based controls.

I just tried MS Voice recognition, a software that will do what I tell.. I just yawned and it canceled my window and opened the start menu.

There's still a lot of work to do on this, really. and even then, it is MUCH simpler to hit the darn Window key than to say "Begin voice recognition" wait 3 seconds and say "Open start menu" wait a second for the command to be recognized and THEN see the menu.

Ummmm...I don't know how recently you've tried this but Microsoft's voice recognition is extremely good already and it will only get better. Every time I've had to call to activate Windows or Office it recognizes me perfectly and I've even tried to say the code as fast as humanly possible and it STILL gets it right. Bing mobile's voice recognition is very, very good as well. Voice recognition is going to be the future, although I'm sure it's not going to replace the keyboard anytime soon.

Maybe it just likes your voice, but I've never gotten the Windows Activation program to recognize all of the numbers I'm saying correctly. It usually requires me to say the same series of numbers twice before it can recognize what I'm saying.

Besides, even if speech is truly the next touch, Google and/or Apple will probably demonstrate it better than Microsoft can, but that's probably just 'cause Microsoft doesn't know how to make commercials that show off their features.

Most speech recognition software requires you to read a few paragraphs that are designed to collect data on your speech pattern. So the computer will be better able to understand you. As for slang or people who cannot properly string a sentence together well there might be an app for that . But in all seriousness it would be nice to say a text message so you don't have to handle a phone. It would be a nice Sync feature.
