[citation][nom]kamar6[/nom]Instead of cutting jobs in affected areas and hiring in unaffected areas.....how about position transfers[/citation]
With unemployment so high right now, they can hire new people, and low-ball their salaries.

"Thanks to a recovering economy..."

wait, what? We are talking about the USA here? coz i don't know what economy you guys are talking about...maybe that FAKE veil the government has pulled over your eyes with help of the people friendly president. Things are NOT ok. the country is closer to a total collapse than ever before.

but sure...a recovering economy is the reason... np. glhf.

Really? I all my laid off friends and my wife all have full time jobs again and we are seeing a mass exodus from my company as people leave for new job opportunities. Most that were laid off are getting paid about 10% less, but at least they are working. The economy certainly is not firing on all it's cylinders, but does not appear to be that bad, at least in where I live.

[citation][nom]extremepcs[/nom]Odds are the cuts will be U.S. emloyees so they can hire more people overseas at much lower wages. Corporate greed at its best![/citation]

pretty much....

Yeah, my company has been growing and hiring new people and is still looking for some more. When we were hiring a new lab manager about a year ago we had over 100 applicants whereas now we're only seeing 10-20ish for positions. Of course, our major problem is finding qualified engineers and scientists, there's a lack of good ones out there. Similarly, my wife, couldn't find a decent job for 2 years after getting out of the Navy has been happily working her new job for 5 months.

damn, I work for micro$oft doing support for the 360...they have over 700 positions to fill by the end of the year because they are actually bringing alot of the positions back from overseas for support, and it is guaranteed work because all the 360 does is break down. So I happen to know that alot of those layoffs will be in India...

[citation][nom]jomofro39[/nom]One Apple layoff starting today: the poor engineer who dreamt up that antenna.[/citation]

no, A 'designer' would have dreamt up that antenna, the engineers would have said "no, that's a terrible idea" then Jobs would have come over and said "no, I don't care, it looks pretty, it works sometimes, that's all that matters"

so unless Jobs wants to fire himself (something I could get behind)...

guess this is why U.S. unemployment is still going up.

I kinda forgot that all of those massive job cuts announced by the big companies during the GFC were long term plans.

When the company you work for has job openings, that's not the same as an "economic recovery". The Great Depression was only bad for the 25% who didn't have jobs, everyone else thought it was great?

No tarballs at the Oregon coast, everything's fantastic!

Okay so it takes them this long to figure out they are making stuff that no one wants and their stuff does not work so finally they are cutting jobs just to survive.

Maybe if they figured out what users want and listen to users without spying on their users they will start making money again.

The epiphany of stupidity in Redmond CA.

There are always people without jobs... And everyone else will think it's great. I would characterize a general increase in jobs as a recovery if it was fairly significant.

I see your point - except the economy isn't located in a specific location like the problem in the Gulf of Mexico. New hirings do effect the overall economy.

All that said - "So far this year, private-sector employment has increased by 593,000" (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm)

As for Microsoft - I think it's probably true about lowballing starting salaries, but from an economic perspective it's better to have 2 people working for less in the place of 1 working for more. =/ (Not that the hiring to firing ratio is 2:1 - just saying)

When I was unemployed last time a few years ago, a social worker said it best.
In her 30 years experience, she has seen any economy in highs and lows. But this is the worst ever seen. Because people unemployed now have college degrees, good experience, good resumes, good interview skills, able to retrain themselves. etc etc. "These people can not be helped in the traditional way.."

hey, when all the jobs require math/computer science skills and the usa ranks towards the middle/bottom of the industrialized world, where do you think the jobs are going to/new hires are coming from?
