[citation][nom]madooo12[/nom]so that's why the idiots at google bought motorola, they are 100% apple copiers even at trollingnote: I hate apple as much as google but google seems to be copying apple in everything eg. an OS built on a UNIX distro, a mobile OS, trolling....[/citation]

Yeah... Google didn't copy anything that you mentioned. Maybe it was Apple who copied? Unix is a far older operating system than iOS and iOS is not even the hundredth OS to be based on Unix, so Google using Linux to make Android is not copying Apple.

Google making a mobile OS is not copying Apple, it's entering a rich and growing market.

Trolling? Considering that Google, isn't trolling with the patents and such that the purchase entitled them, I fail to see how it makes them a patent troll.

[citation][nom]fudoka711[/nom]I have this funny feeling that if you remove Great Britain from the European market, the United States (not North America) is a larger market than the rest of the European Union. But that's besides the point.Germany seems to be very fickle with using things the rest of the world uses. I don't hear patent infringement cases with the other European countries. I also don't hear anything about other countries switching to Linux en masse.Linux = great for serversWindows = great for the work computer[/citation]

The only problem with Linux is that some important software isn't supported by it. However, this is not nearly as bad of a problem as it used to be. Most work that can be done on Windows can be done on Linux.

lack of information is h.264 lics. to microsoft here in the united states or any where else in the world and motorola is just trying to recoup their losses in one country from the theft of their property by microsoft sales of product using h.264 all over the world?
this is typical media garbage reporting to create a controversy and stir up anger and support of everything should be free for any one to use to make money despite how much time, money and energy it takes some one to invent something.
the 'needs' of the many out weigh the rewards of the few. by rights that argument means farmers should all bust their butts making us food for nothing. and nobody should have to pay for anything, that everything should just be free if we 'need' it and that every one has to work for free because it's needed.
look how well that ideaology is working for foxconn workers and non communists in communist nations.

huh..., I never said UNIX was made by them, I said they made an OS built over a UNIX distro, so did google, they made a mobile OS based on it so did google, they made it work on tablets, so did google, they trolled, so did google, they make a web browser based on an OS renderer (KHTML), so did google, they made a music service, so did google, they made a cloud service so did google

as I said, I'm no apple fan but really google is quite copying them

and if you think charging $4B annually for using patents is not trolling, then you are a google fanboy troll

[citation][nom]aftcomet[/nom]Starting a patent war with Microsoft is just plain dumb. What's even dumber are the judges in Germany. It took Motorola all this time to sue Microsoft. How long has the Xbox been out? 7 years? I also believe Google bought Motorola Mobility, Not Motorola as a whole. Just their mobile division. And I wonder what business software they use at Motorola? Windows perhaps? Microsoft should demand 50 zillion dollars for it.[/citation]

Actually it is Microsoft that started racketeering the Android manufacturers. Because they cannot sell their shitty Windows Phone, they've decided to pray on the Android manufacturers and actually get more money from Android than from Windows phones. Stop defending Microsoft. Microsoft is a big, shitty company that has screwed its customers with overpriced products and because of their monopoly on the OS and Office market, they've managed to kill all real, commercial competitors.
Microsoft is the worst thing that has ever happened to the PC.

Yeah! Google is the only big software company that I like and respect (maybe IBM too but they are not consumer oriented anymore). They are probably the last one that is still not totally evil. They've found a way to make good money without screwing everybody who uses their products. Oh, yeah.... and they are free also. Microsoft releases something free only to kill off the competition. "Apple" and "free" could not be used in the same sentence.

Just 10 years ago most people were able to realize what evil is Microsoft. These days it appears to me that Microsoft has managed to brainwash the consumers and so many think that their crappy products are great. I cannot believe that Microsoft has so many fans here.

[citation][nom]cee2cee[/nom]Honestly what I don't get is why Microsoft doesn't just give a big F U to Germany and stop selling Windows and Xbox there. They'll have them begging for it back real soon.[/citation]

Coz Germany will invade USA again and crush your petty army... 😀 You don't believe that? If it weren't for the Soviets, the USA would have had two capitals currently - Tokyo and Berlin. 😛

The only problem with Linux is that there is no standard and that there is TOO MUCH choice.
Yeah, really having 10 window managers does not make it any better. One good window manager would be much better than 10 crappy ones.
None of the current ones is good enough. There is too much redundancy. Redundancy is not always good.
There are still many things that do not work quite right but instead of fixing them... trivial like clickpads are poorly supported. Well we have 10+ window managers and 2000 distributions all doing the same but none of the quite right out of the box.

[citation][nom]matt_b[/nom]Your points are valid except the harping about Europe equals Germany. Your comparison is the equivalent of a lawsuit from New York state, and then talking about the entire United States. Regardless, I'm sure some settlement will be reached in an appeals court involving royalties and product sales will continue - as is the usual motion of events. However, that 4 billion per year figure needs to be grossly knocked down, that's an outrageously-high number and grounds for an appeal all by itself.[/citation]

Practically Europe is Germany 😀 I am not a German myself and the Germans are not the most likable people in Europe but if I have to choose to side with a single nation it will be always Germany.

Google isn't charging any of this!!! This is Motorola! This has nothing to do with Google! Google only bought out Botorola Mobility, not the entire company, and has no affiliation with Motorola!

I never said that you said that Apple made Unix. Google used Linux PURELY because it is the ONLY reasonable option. Are you going to mock every other company, such as M$, who competes with Apple and has products that do similar things? Just because Ford was the first guys to mass produce cars does not mean that every other car company is a copy cat. It's called not having a monopoly or near monopoly (I won't fool myself into thinking that Aply would have a true monopoly, but it would be FAR closer to a monopoly if there was no Android).

Google wanted to compete with Apple in these markets thus they did. That's not being a copy cat. Being a copy cat would hae been using similar code to Apple and actually COPYING APPLE.

Many of the distributions of Linux are for completely different purposes. They are not all the same, not even all of the distributions that target similar markets. I like choice. I like it a lot. We have a few managers that are the leaders (most of them are either compatible with a few others, or not used as much) and that is good enough.

There is not too much choice. Sure, there is some redundancy, but it's not as bad as you claim. You also didn't mention that a lot of the distributions are not actively developed much, if at all anymore and have been pretty much abandoned, thus don't matter much anyway.

You don't know that at ALL. The USA had the Atom bombs, so you really don't know. I highly doubt that you could possibly know how history would have transpired had Russia not attacked Germany (considering that Germany attacked them first, Russia not attacking Germany was fairly unlikely, even if the fact that they did attack Germany isn't enough evidence to that).

M$ isn't being evil in this case. $4B is a huge amount for Motorola to demand, especially per year. Motorola seems to be the moral low ground for this.

Typo, meant to say Motorola when I said Botorola. I don't see why Tom's doesn't have an edit button for Tom's guide, but I suppose that I should have paid more attention since I know that Tom's Guide has no edit button. My bad.

Isn't H.264 a universally known file extension that any free movie player has? Why not sue all of those people for integration with add-on's to the browser that do the exact same thing as what is included in IE.

but they didn't have to do the exact same things apple made when they made it, why did they choose the same markets as apple

... I fail to understand how this is a hard concept. Apple does not own the phone market. It's not their's. Google simply joined a market. THAT'S HOW BUSINESS WORKS. Businesses don't just say "oh there's another company in this market, so I won't join it". That isn't what businesses do. If you don't understand business even as well as I do, well that's a surprise for me. Furthermore, Google didn't do the EXACT same thing as Apple. Androids are different phones with differing hardware and features. Hell, it even has a different business model and strategy.

Also, to not join the smart phone market would have meant that Apple would have a near monopoly on this market, unless another player stepped up. M$ and BB certainly aren't getting good enough market share to keep it a fair market without Google right now.

Both Germany and France have far larger economies than the UK.

As for patent cases being tried 'only' in Germany, they are the largest power in the EU, so you test your chances there, if it works you go after the rest of the EU.

As for Linux... I have countless friends in Germany (not just geeks) and a large proportion uses a Linux box for day to day computing.
