Multiple computers using one speaker system

Hello, i have a Mac Pro 2013 and a custom built computer. Both are connected to a screen via Display port (which can send audio). As they are both connected to one screen i dont use them at the same time, although they are always turned on.

My question, i would like to use one speaker system for both computers. If i were to connect a pair of speakers and subwoofer to the display via audio out, could both systems then use the speakers for audio?

if your monitor has 3.5mm output then yes, a 2.1 system should work. it should work fine if it is pulling audio from the displayport but if your monitor uses an aux jack to connect to the pc via 3.5mm for audio then you may have a few complications.

otherwise you could use a 3.5mm switch with the set connected to the output and two input lines going to the switch from your pcs. you can then pick a or b source.
