Must have apps, programs and utilites for a brand new computer

Building my new PC tomorrow, includes 4770k, Gigabyte Z87X-D3H, 8GB Patriot Viper RAM, MSI GTX 780, bequiet powerzone 850w PSU, Sandisk 128GB SSD, 2TB Seagate Barracuda, and Corsair 650D Case.

Staying away from drivers etc, what do I need to install to boost performance, ease of use etc.

I know to download the basics such as drivers, steam, Skype, chrome etc, but what else should I get. This is for a gaming computer by the way.

Depends on what you want it to do:
VLC
Notepad++
TeamViewer
Foxit Reader
FireFox
CDBurnerXP
IrfanView
7-Zip

Those are some of my typical choices for a new build. Select the applications, get the installer, run it...let it do its thing.
