No, the bluetooth headphones control their own audio not the speaker. But when the headphones are connected audio goes to them and not the speaker so it should be muted already.

I reached Google support and they said my Tribit earphones had a compatibility problem with the Android tablet. When I switched to my Skull Candy ones, the problem of speakers/earphones both being on, went away.
