My dell laptop goes black while i am using it

My dell Insprion 1500 will go black screen while i am using it and be black for days. Then come on for days. What can i check on this?

Explain 'black screen' in more detail. Does the laptop stop running?
When the screen is black can you shine a light on it or hold it next to a lamp and see anything on the screen?
