My digital TV receiver box has an IR IN port. What is an IR?

The IR input is so if the IR receiver on the front of the box is blocked by cabinet doors you can plug an IR receiver on a wire that could be placed outside the cabinet. It could also be used with an RF based universal remote or home automation system rather than gluing an IR emitter to the front of the box.
