MY MAILMAN IS AN IDIOT !!

It's a long long story, starting with an eBay/Paypal sale gone VERY WRONG .

My laptop couldn't be delivered to the "confirmed address" on the Paypal
payment because it turned out to be a hijacked account, a post office in
Texas somewhere returned it to me. It was insured for the FULL amount of
the winning bid .. The auction was for a new HP Pavillion - 17 inch
monitor - 7000 series ... 80 gig hard drive .. DVD .. blah blah ... I had
requested that the package MUST be signed for [had to be covered under
Paypal's seller protection policy. Not certified, but something else.
Something that meant "special handling."

On Thursday at my office I checked the Post office website for the delivery
confirmation and see the computer had been returned to me in Deltona,
Florida. I figure there is probably a slip in my mailbox to come get it. I
didn't check the mailbox on Thursday night, but I checked it on Friday night
and there was still no notice ...

We were in the process of building a little pen on the side of the front
step, a walled area, but no cover, for my tortoises. Saturday morning I
went outside to measure so I could go get some cinder blocks .. that is
when I first noticed the laptop. The two previous days the temp reached 100
degrees - but the POURING RAIN cooled things off a few times each day.

The box was dry but flimsy .. I took out the laptop and it appeared to be ok
... but when I first turned it on the keys didn't work right .. guess it got
wet or damp inside .. and the screen was a bit foggy. I left it running for
a few hours and eventually it all dried up. The keyboard starting working
fine, the monitor was clear .. I didn't try the CD-rom or try to connect to
our network .. I was too irritated.

FINALLY TO MY QUESTION ... or questions.

1] This is NOT acceptable, right ?? Or am I being picky by saying it is not
?? After all . . it is working fine now.

2] Could the water and heat have done any damage that won't show up until
later ???

I go to the post office tomorrow, they want the package - the computer - my
receipts ... etc ...

Do I make a claim ?? and if so, on what grounds ??

Thanks, just need some pros to tell me their opinion.

Well, that's a pretty shabby way to deliver something. You have a valid
complaint about the manner of delivery which you should make known. The
lucky thing is your computer seems to have survived. After all, they are
meant to take some abuse. I don't think you have anything to make a claim
about. I really don't think any damage will show up later, but nothing is
guaranteed with computers!

The USPS *is not* allowede to leave anything that will not fit inot your
mailbox without a special signed permision slip from you; this can be a
bother, but, this situation is exactly why they have that policy. File a
claim and make them produce your signed permision for them to leave
unattended packages.

If not a claim, then at least a complaint.

My biggest concern is : will the computer start to rust inside being it got
wet? If not, it's for sale. Diane

Never do this.
Wet operating electronics cause further damage due to the water shorting
out stuff, and tracks corroding fast.
For future reference, the best thing to do is to open it up as much as
you can (unscrew it, and open up), and place in an airing cupboard,
or somewhere warm and dry to dry out for a week or so.
And that's only if it's clean water.

Yes, further damage can be caused by water that is difficult to detect
until it dies later on.
The water (especially if operated) can cause corrosion, that can lead to
further corrosion, even in fairly dry places.

My guess is no, it can tollerate a little water once dry, but it's only a
guess.
