Solved! My stereo died - fix or how to repurpose the speakers?

Hello everybody,

I have this 11 year old Philips MCI500h stereo set that I use for both music and as audio for my TV through a 3,5 mm jack.

After 11 years of service it died the other day. That is, the central unit turns on just fine, but there must be some sort of bad connection, as one audio port plays no sound and the other plays clear sound but is cut off often (regardless of the speaker plugged in).

1) First of all, I have been wondering whether it is possible to fix my central unit? Or would it be way to complicated to track down and fix the error? (The service manual is here: https://data2.manualslib.com/pdf6/1.../mci500h.pdf?1f608b7956759b606146f558550e3f0a).

2) Second, with almost zero experience in messing with audio setups, I have been considering whether I could by a new amp and repurpose the speakers, so my setup will look and sound more or less the same without too much hassle.

But is it powerful enough for the speakers? And will I be able to control the audio played from my TV using the TV-remote and not the knob on the amp?

3) When looking into amps I realized that the speakers connect to the central unit through some sort of connector. I have attached photos. Two cables exit the speaker, and then connect into this plastic thingy. You can remove the plastic casing only to reveal another wierd cable underneath (photos:

How do I connect these speakers to a regular amp?

I would guess those are just standard speaker connections with an adapter to fit the back of the receiver. If you strip the wires you should be able to connect them to the speaker outputs on an amplifier.

If you use the headphone out on a TV you should be able to use the TV volume to control the sound.

You can also get a small receiver used on craigslist, plenty of those for cheap.
