my toshiba pro sat laptop when i take my battery out there no power getting to it ..when i put battery in it power up but goes

my laptop wont power up when I don't use battery ,,when I put battery in it comes on an then closes down saying battery not charged

Well some laptops will not work if the battery isn't in. Does the battery charge when the laptop is turned off?
