I have been researching laptops recently, but I do not have a lot of experience with them.

What I am looking for it one that is at least semi portable (15 in or smaller), with a strong enough processor to handle general use and light gaming (I do not want or expect it to run high end games, that is what my desktop is for, but a discreet card would be nice.) Its primary use will be work and school, and as such should be somewhat rugged.

As for budget, I want it to cost as little as possible, but I 800 is my current limit, if nothing can be found at that price or lower I may consider bringing that up.

If there is anything else you need to know just ask, I will be monitoring this.

dont get any notebook without IPS display . it makes a big difference

for $899 I recommend this from Sony , they are giving 10% discounts for students , and giving a $145 battery sheet for free

https://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921666493955&categoryId=8198552921644931999

you will never regret getting this notebook

for more power , you can look at this

https://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921666495150&categoryId=8198552921644931999

note that you can pick white color if you wish

DONT FORGET TO ASK FOR the 145$ battery sheet , it gives total 7 hours battery life.

That is a very solid option (And I might end up going with it), but as it is a bit over my initial budget, are there any other options that people may know of?

Edit: What is your opinion on these (I like their size and the I7 for the price):
Lenovo y410p

that Sony is 1920x1080 IPS screen ...

the harddisk in the sony is 7200 rpm fast one , in the Lenovo is 5400 slow and will drive you crazy

if you want Lenovo get only Thinkpad
