Hi, I'm looking for some advice on whether I should repair or replace my laptop. I have a 5 year old dell laptop with i-7 processor, 256gb, 8gb ram. it's in the shop and the repair cost is $60.

I'm planning on building a desktop in November so just need something till then. I was actually thinking of getting a chrome book because when I have a desktop, I won't need a powerful laptop. does anyone have experience with chrome books and if they're any good?

what do you guys think? repair or replace?

It is always nice to have a backup pc.
I think I would repair the laptop.
And... I would consider replacing the hard drive with a ssd. It will make all the difference in the world for performance.
It will be a very good performer.
You might not even need a desktop build unless you need one for gaming.

Chromebook uses linux-based operationg system. It's good if you use a lot of Google based stuff but other than being cheap I see it has no advantage over other laptops. Get a cheap Windows laptop should work better.

What are the repairs? Is there a chance it won't fix the laptop or that it'll diminish it's functionality? Basically, is there a chance you'd just be throwing your $60 into a lost cause?

You should really ask yourself a few questions: what would be the benefit to replacing your laptop over repairing it? Even if you replaced it with a cheap Chromebook, you'll be spending more than a $60 repair, so you won't exactly be saving money for your build. I'm assuming you're not doing any hardcore gaming with the machine if you're looking to replace with a Chromebook, so I'm guessing you'll be doing word processing, web-surfing, and that's about it?

There's two months until November. Personally, I'd get the laptop repaired. It sounds like a way better machine than anything you could replace it with at $60. Five years sounds old in computing, but you could get another five more years out of that laptop -- especially if all you need it for is Word processing and other office type tasks. Don't waste your money on a new laptop that'll be collecting dust in two months, put it towards a better build.
