1. What is your budget? I would prefer to keep it under $1000, but hopefully it will be under $900. Note, there are places that I will get a student discount, if that knowledge helps at all.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? This is a huge selling point for me. I already have a fairly large laptop for desktop replacement, so now I'm looking for a 14 inch, but if not possible, the maximum size I'll go with is 15.6"

3. What screen resolution do you want? Whatever HD or Full HD resolutions are

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? Portable. I will be carrying it to classes and around a fairly large campus

5. How much battery life do you need? I'd like to have at least 4-5 hours of battery life, since I will frequently be using it away from an outlet.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? Any games I will play with this laptop will be very basic. I'm not a PC gamer.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, etc.) I do photo edit and watch movies, and may do that with this. I will definitely end up running lab simulators as well as softwares for external lab equipment. I will most likely not be running AutoCAD, unless I go through with a double major, which is very well possible, so keep this in the realm of possibilities. Definitely presentation softwares and word processing. I tend to run a bunch of things at once.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? My university suggests at least 750 GB with an SSD. However, I'm not sure whether the SSD will be necessary, so options both with and without it will be nice.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links. No preferences here, as long as they're reliable.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? Hopefully all 4 years of university and possibly after that, depending. I think between it and the laptop I have now (2 years running so far), they should survive together. I make sure to keep up to date drivers, information, and avoid physical damage and viruses...

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc? This isn't a huge problem. My stationary laptop has a good optical drive. However, I definitely want this laptop to have an optical drive.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. I don't want to seem particularly picky. No preferences in buying, but I have never had a good experience with tosh*tba. I currently have an HP and like it, but I see a lot of others having issues with the brand; same goes for acer.

13. What country do you live in? USA

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed. i7 processor (3rd generation or better) is a must, as well as 6 GB RAM or more. I would prefer to have an aluminum chassis. It's not a requirement, but I tend to like these bodies a lot more. I would like a touch screen since Windows 8 is becoming pretty standard though, again, not required since it should work fine without it. I don't like very much flex in the keyboards. Finally, I prefer a trackpad that actually has separate buttons, but not a huge deal if it doesn't and meets the rest of what I've said.

Thanks for any input!

do you want ultra low voltage or regular mobile cpu ?

and by i7 do you mean any i7 or Quad core i7 ?

Advice : get only Haswell , they offer 50% more battery life.

Advice : get ips monitor ...

please Answer about the cpu so I can help.

if u can wait a little , Lenovo Thinkpad T440s is coming with everything ., ips , long battery life and Haswell cpu.

Regular CPU. I don't want to cut performance with as much as I expect to be using it. At least a dual core i7 is recommended my my college, so whatever you think is best. I've always been told to go with a quad core, but that's why I'm here.

Do you think that it will be out soon? My classes start mid august, and I expect to need it by beginning of September.

I will definitely be on the lookout for the laptop, and I greatly appreciate your help. I've actually been looking at lenovo mainly, such as the IdeaPad Y410p and z400 touch, but a lot of reviews mentioned some issues with them that I'd like to avoid.

However, just in case it is way out of my price range (because I've noticed their thinkpads get very expensive, and with all of that on this model, I can only imagine...), are there any other models to consider as well?

It will, presumably, be around 1000 at the base. Just getting the T430 to the basics of what I need was well over $1200. If there is some kind of promotion going on that makes it more affordable, I will surely get it, but for now I would like to keep my options open.

I'm willing to compromise on some of the things I listed, and it not being Lenovo is fine too. Nor does the processor need to be haswell, if that helps at all.

No, but there would be no reason for a better, newer laptop to cost less than and older model. Furthermore, if it is out of my budget or something else it wrong with it, I do not want to be left with no idea of what to do or what to get. I'm not saying it's not an option, but I don't want it to be september, when I need the laptop by, and realize that this model doesn't work for me.

I went with the cheapest model on that list you gave me, and clicked it to customize it. That price is with an i5, and I require an i7, so I included that. I need at least 6 GB RAM, and that price only includes 4, so I upgraded it to the next cheapest size. I need at least 750 GB Hard drive, which that didn't even offer, so I just left it; but without it, it clearly doesn't suit my needs. That easily got it up to $1,024, and that was with a coupon and a 500 GB hard drive...

So you can see where I don't want to hold out for something that will likely be way over $1,000, when a 3rd generation i7 is already over $1,000

new generations allways give better prices and more options and larger drives and more memory for the same old prices...

Remember when the standard was 80G harddisk and 2G of ram ? it was also $1000

dont loose this wonderfull machine , wait like 2 weeks . it is already announced. the T440s is a good machine , you will regret missing it.

I'm not saying that I'm going to miss out on it, but you nor I have any idea what the pricing will be like. You can't very well predict that. Haswell in and of itself adds about 200 dollars on most models. At this point in the technological era, you're not going to see a completely new generation with everything better than the last generation, and expect it to be cheaper. It doesn't just happen. I would still like to consider other models.

the Sony Vaio S

true it is 1199$ but the Battery sheet with it is worth $150 and gives total of 7 hours total battery.

the VAIO Extended Sheet Battery
