need help connecting to hdmi with toshiba laptop

I have a toshiba satellite c75d-b, it has windows 7 and I am trying to connect to hdmi, but it will not work, any ideas?

2 things, there is a function key that controls where it displays, I want to say it's f4 but I'm not sure on that. The other thing to look at is under screen resolution, it has options as to where/what to display, make sure that it recognizes the 2nd display, and see if it will allow you to make changes.
