I have a oem remote that I bought on eBay for my pioneer vsx 50 receiver but I don't know how to connect it. Can anyone help me out please?

In most cases it should work as soon as you put batteries in it. Your receiver/remote does have the option of using multiple receiver/remotes in the same room so maybe the receiver and remote are set to different numbers. Check the owners manual pages 53 and 69 on how to check and change that.

What do I do first to enter those codes? Press rcu setup with what? What are the steps?

Since the owners manual shows no codes for AVRs you can assume that it should by default work with that AVR.
Make sure that you press the "receiver" button before you try the remote. You may have to press it again after selecting an input button since that may switch some remote functions to operate the device connected to that input.
You can test if the remote is sending any IR with your phone
