Hey there,

In my searches I have come across the MSI GX640-260US. The specifications are as follows:

MSI GX640-260US ($1429AUD)
Intel HM55 Chipset
Intel Core i5-450M @ 2.4GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon 5850M 1GB
4GB DDR3 RAM
Integrated Wireless 802.11a/g/n + Blu-Tooth
500GB 7200RPM HDD
15.4" Wide SXGA+ LCD screen 1680x1050 (16:10)
9-Cell Battery (2.5-3.5 Hours Battery Life)
6.3lbs (2.86kg)

How is this computer going to perform for gaming? I like this because it still has an express card slot and it is quite light at only 2.86kg (ASUS G53 is more than 3.4kg and Alienware M15x is 4.25kg). Also, at only $1429 AUD this is a bargain.

Please do not simply recommend other computers to me (as others have done) please weigh up what they do vs what they cost. I do not want anything more expensive than $1700AUD and it must be from within Australia.

GX640 is a great laptop, it may not have the best keyboard, display and cooling solution but considering it's price,it's a good deal.

That computer will perform very well for whatever gaming you want to do on that screen, but you're going to want to game on a 17 inch screen instead of 15. The keyboard will be better designed because there's more room for it, and the resolution will be greater. Upgrading the size usually doesn't raise the price too high.

It is not the price that concerns me, it is the portability factor. One of the main reasons I have selected the GX640 here, as opposed to something like the GX660 or ASUS G53, is the weight and size. A 15.4" laptop with a 16:10 aspect ratio on a screen that goes almost to the edge of the case keeps size down and with a weight of only 6.3lbs (2.86kg) it is one of the lightest laptops around. The fact that I can get gaming-grade specifications in this thing is just awesome.

I do not want it to excel at gaming - I have a desktop for that - but I want it to be able to run everything at medium/high (not ultra) so that I can take it overseas, to LANs, mates houses, just general travel.
