Need some sort of phone number acquisition wizard

I am looking to get a vanity number for my business, the number is not used by anyone, I can call and it says its not a working number. Called At&t and Sprint and asked if it was portable, it shows up in there books as nothing, no name or carrier attached, they same its not possible. Google displays no information other than that it existed as a landline once with a company now owned by At&t, no names, businesses, spam records, or bread-trail of any kind, at a loss here and cant find how i go about getting this number. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!
