Need Suggestion in deciding a laptop

Hi All,

I have narrowed down my search to the below two laptops.
Which of these should I prefer? My purpose is: Video editing/rendering

HP Pavilion 15-ab034TX:
Core i7 5500U(5gen)
GT840M 2GB
RAM8GB 1TB HDD.

OR

HP Envy 15-k201tx:
Corei5 5200U(5th gen)
GTX 850 4GB
RAM8GB 1TB HDD.

So, basically an i7 with 2GB of GT840M or i5 with 4GB of GTX 850 is better?

For gaming purposes you want to go with the laptop that has the more powerful GPU. In your case, the GTX 850m.

However, if your primary purpose is video editing / rendering, then you want the CPU that is more powerful because that will reduce rendering time. The Core i7-5500u has higher clock speeds but only by 200MHz base and 300MHz Turbo Boost. But every little bit helps especially for long videos.

What about the difference in GPU? Isnt 2Gb Gforce 940M too low when compared to 4GB GTX 850m?

As I stated, the GTX 850m is more powerful, but it only comes into play if you are using video effects that gets a performance increase from the GPU. Not all effects are boosted by the GPU from my understanding, however, I do not do video editing. I have only done video encoding (movies) so at least for my purposes, CPU performance is far more important than GPU performance.

If you are going to be using a lot of video effects, then perhaps getting the slightly slower CPU and more powerflu GPU is the better option.

Ok. So as per you I should go with i5+4GB GTX 850m. Is that correct?

For video encoding I would get the i7-5500u + GT 840m.

For playing games and general use I would get the i5-5200u + GT 850m.

the 2GB in GT 940M wont be an issue?

The other option is GTX 850M 4GB

For video effects 2GB of VRAM is more than enough as it would be for games.

As I have already stated, for video effects that relies on the GPU will perform better with the GTX 850m.
